"Within an hour, darkness closed over the city as if someone had slammed shut the door of an icehouse,
and powerful winds began to move through the park like big trains long overdue from Canada." Mark Helprin, Winter's Tale
Northern winters can be a beautiful thing. It can also be frigid, icy and seemingly unrelenting. Regardless of the weather, the Real Estate market moves on. There are always Buyers and Sellers regardless of the time of year. There are steps you can take to make your home more appealing. Hopefully, some of these tips may warm up your market when the weather's frightful.
Shovel Your Snow
This may seem obvious, but if your walk is icy, snow covered or down-right dangerous, potential Buyers may not even venture inside. Do your best to keep walkways and stairs cleared and salted. If you have backyard paths and decks, it may be a good idea to keep them as clear as you can. Nobody said keeping a home show-ready was easy. If they did, they were lying.. or single… and childless, petless and living in an apartment.
Clear the Clutter
The winter brings with it a myriad of boots, coats, mitts, hats and other extras that don’t normally grace your front hall. Only keep out the total necessities. Clutter makes it seem as if there is not enough storage, even if there is.
Warm It Up
If the temperature is frigid, turn up the heat a bit. A degree or two above what you might normally set the furnace at can make people feel warm and cozy the minute they walk in. There is nothing wrong with helping potential Buyers be joyous about entering your home and reluctant to leave it. Don’t turn it up too much though. Chances are Buyers will keep their coats on and you don’t want them boiling to death in your home. That is not a good thing.
Light ‘er Up
It can be really grey, dark and dismal in winter. Turn on the lights. Lots of lights, in every room. Make it cozy and bright so that the darkness is kept at bay and the house seems warm and light.
